For achieve this, the internet is the most important ingredient to exchange data with systems and other devices. These devices range from common household items to sophisticated industrial tools. With more than 7 billion IoT devices connected today, experts forecast this number to rise to 10 billion by 2020 and 22 billion by 2025.

The importance of IoT in technological development

In recent years, IoT has become one of the most important technologies of the 21st century. Now that we can connect everyday objects (kitchen appliances, cars, thermostats, baby monitoring monitors, etc.) to the Internet through integrated devices, seamless communication between people, processes and things is possible.

What technologies have made IoT possible?

  • Access low-cost, low-power sensor technology. Affordable and reliable sensors are making IoT technology possible for more manufacturers.
  • Connectivity A host of network protocols for the Internet have made it easy to connect sensors to the cloud and other “things” for efficient data transfer.
  • Cloud computing platforms. The increased availability of cloud platforms enables businesses and consumers to access the infrastructure they need to scale without having to manage everything.
  • Machine learning and analytics. With advances in machine learning and analytics, along with access to large and varied amounts of data stored in the cloud, companies can gather information more quickly and easily. On the one hand, the emergence of these allied technologies continues to go beyond the limits of IoT; on the other, the data produced by IoT also powers these technologies.
  • Conversational artificial intelligence (AI). Advances in neural networks have brought natural language processing (NLP) to IoT devices (such as Alexa, Cortana, and Siri personal digital assistants) and made them attractive, affordable, and viable for home use.

Acknowledgement of privacy and security concerns in IoT

Although it has been a great step in bringing us ease in many daily tasks and enjoying experiences in a new way, at the same time and in the same proportion the risk of being exposed to attacks with the information we share has increased, not only as people but also corporations, we mean exactly cyber-security problems.

It is the task of companies that every day become more dependent on connected devices, to work on improving security for the management of their data and that of customers, it is increasingly vital to be able to do a scan to find any anomaly between both points of connectivity, also in detecting undesirable changes in databases.

Tips to secure IoT systems in industrial cyber-security

To ensure that IoT systems are used efficiently and safely, Kaspersky experts offer organizations some tips:

  • Keep protection in mind from the beginning of your IoT deployment by using dedicated security solutions.
  • Assess the security status of a device prior to deployment.
  • Conduct periodic security audits; as well as providing the security team responsible for protecting IoT systems with updated information on threats.
  • Establish procedures to obtain information on important vulnerabilities in software and applications, and available updates to ensure adequate and timely responses to any incident.
  • Implement cyber-security solutions designed to analyze network traffic, detect and prevent anomalies and attacks on the IoT network, and integrate the analysis into the company’s network security system.

What would you expect from now on with IoT

In my opinion, all this has reached a worrying point, where our tastes, thoughts and ideals can be registered and therefore consulted, for purposes such as bombarding us with advertising that is apparently harmless, as to be persecuted by organizations which affect their interests, the violation of our privacy in the wrong hands could be harmful, since we will be subject to think in a certain way and not in another, we could enter into slavery and submission.

I hope we do not reach that point and we can enjoy each step forward in improving this area, which is our present and our future.

See you in the next post!
